Law-Related Web Directories and "Search Engines"
Some law schools and other institutions have been developing web directories for years, and have more recently been joined by commercial companies. These are often a good starting point if you don't find what you need at the specific sites we've linked for you. There is much overlap among these directories.
- The ABA's LawLink(TM) Legal Research Jumpstation
- American Law Sources On-Line -- "The purpose of ALSO! is to provide a comprehensive, uniform, and useful compilation of links to all on-line sources of American law that are available without charge." See ALSO.
- CataLaw: Metaindex of Law and Government -- "the catalog of catalogs of law on the 'net."
- FindLaw -- begun as a list of Internet resources for a workshop of the Northern California Law Librarians, this site is a well-organized searchable collection of links, and features the LawCrawler search engine that enables you to tailor your search. Some reviews have indicated this is one of the best legal search engines.
- GovSpot -- well-organized collection of links to government sites
- Guide to Resources for Legal Professionals -- excellent starting point. On The Virtual Chase, web site for legal professionals produced by Genie Tyburski, law librarian at Philadelphia-based Ballard Spahr.
- The Law Engine! (also known as FastSearch)-- "Dedicated to providing the best on-line law sources available in a fast, well-organized, easy-to-use, single-page format." Categorized links to courts, state and federal law, legal associations, employment, legal reference, law schools, newspapers, government agencies, private investigators and experts, forms, reference materials, seminars, and litigation aids.
- LawGuru.com has collected more than 200 legal search engines at one site (this includes many listed on this page).
- Law Library Resource Xchange (LLRX) links page -- Law Library Resource Xchange (LLRX) is a unique Webzine with a special focus on research, management and technology topics for legal professionals.
- The 'Lectric Law Library -- "to allow you to easily find and access law related information, products and services that you want or need.... while there's some stuff for people involved in the legal profession, we also have... material that just about everyone might use at one time or another."
- The Legal Information Institute (Cornell) -- This site maintained by the law school at Cornell offers a lot of useful information and links, most notably a hypertext front-end to recent United States Supreme Court decisions.
- Legal Research Meta-Index-- handy starting point for getting into many legal research sites, with annotations, and a sample of how to phrase your query for each site. From Georgia State University College of Law.
- Rominger Legal -- links to many legal and general resources, plus some search engines
- VersusLaw -- aka V. (formerly LLR) -- "If you'd like to do all your legal research for less than the cost of your cellular phone bill, you know why you need V." Free links, legal dictionary, and legal forms, and subscriptions to appellate caselaw.
- The Virtual Chase -- Excellent research site for legal professionals, by Genie Tyburski, research librarian for Philadelphia-based Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll. More than 500 pages of information about resources and research strategies (and growing).
