How does the Online Campus work?

  • The online campus replicates the experience of a classroom seminar, with some enhancements that take advantage of the Internet.
  • Video or audio of the recorded program "streams" in a window on the lawyer's computer. The practical, high quality "yellow books" that Pennsylvania lawyers prize are included in electronic form as searchable files that can be saved on computer and printed for reference during the program. Lawyers can submit questions or comments.
  • Many courses also include slides. These slides appear on screen as the program plays, with hyperlinks added so that attorneys can open and follow cases, statutes, regulations, and other primary law as it is discussed. They can also be printed for note-taking.
  • Most programs have been pre-recorded and are available at any time, at your convenience. Others are live "webcasts."
  • For a detailed "how to" overview of the system, click here.

How does the system track my
participation?

The system unobtrusively monitors an attorney's participation. To get credit, the lawyer must view (or listen to) all the segments of the program, in order.

What kind of computer system do
I need?

Most modern IBM-compatible PCs will work. For specific hardware and software requirements, follow the tech support link on our Online Campus home page.

Will the Online Campus work on my
Macintosh?

It might! You will need a recent-version web browser, Real Player, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. We suggest that you try viewing one of our free demos (see the Catalog). If that works for you, chances are other courses will work. If you have problems, use the Tech Support link on our Catalog home page. For more information on system requirements, see the Help section of our catalog.

How do I pay for Online CLE?

Online by credit card using a secure server.

How many credits can I earn online?

Under the CLE Board's Distance Learning rules, Pennsylvania lawyers can earn up to 4 of the required 12 annual CLE credits online.

Can I carry online credits over to my
next compliance period?

No. See our Distance Education Demystified page.

Will PBI report my credits to the
CLE Board?

Yes. Just as we do for traditional seminars, we will report your completed online programs within 30 days.

Will I get a "blue form" as proof of
my participation?

Once you have completed the seminar, you will be able to print a Certificate of Participation (and receive one by e-mail). It's not blue, but it's the functional equivalent of the "blue form" we use at our traditional seminars.

Can I get credit in other jurisdictions
or professions?

Our online programs qualify for credit in some jurisdictions and we can assist you in applying for credit in others.
We will also assist members of other professions to apply for credit for our online programs.

What happens if I am unable to participate at the last minute, or have a problem with my internet connection?

The program will be archived within several days of the webcast, and you will be able to take the course at your convenience (within 3 months).

Why is the video tiny and "jerky"?

This is the Internet -- and that's the nature of streaming video on the Internet. Unlike TV, there's limited "bandwidth." Even with a fast connection (e.g., T-1 line, cable modem, DSL), the video is a small image (about 2 inches by 3 inches) and sometimes fuzzy and jerky. In addition to the speed of your connection, other factors that will affect the quality of the video image are the amount of traffic on the Internet when you are viewing the program, and the amount of traffic on your local area network if you are viewing it within a law firm.

If you have a slow connection (e.g., a modem over a traditional telephone line), you may not be able to view video at all, but the audio should be clear, and the system provides substitutes for important video elements (e.g., slides).

Can I use discount coupons for
Online CLE?

Sorry, our discount programs are not applicable to our Online Campus.
