Billions of animals raised for consumption every year. Most of those animals are raised on large corporate farms housing thousands of animals, out of public view and with minimal government oversight. The conditions for intensively farmed animals can give rise to animal welfare concerns. In addition, poorly run farms can lead to zoonotic diseases that threaten human health.
In this presentation, Animal Legal Defense Fund attorneys Jamie Contreras and Lishani Sunday will provide an overview of state animal cruelty laws that apply to farmed animals and the challenges inherent in prosecuting crimes involving farmed animals, with a particular emphasis on Pennsylvania law. Then, Laura Fox, Staff Attorney for the Humane Society of the United States, will discuss strategies for protecting farmed animals and human health through litigation.
Recorded in August 2020.
