Overview
Aging in place refers to the ability of older adults to live in their own homes and communities safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. It is a meaningful and increasingly common approach to growing older, with the potential to enhance quality of life and promote independence.
As more clients choose to remain in their homes as they age, attorneys must be prepared to address the legal issues that arise as clients’ financial, healthcare, and support needs evolve. This practical CLE will focus on the attorney’s role in counseling clients, identifying planning gaps, drafting and reviewing key documents, and coordinating with family members and other professionals.
Topics include capacity and competency concerns, powers of attorney, advance directives, healthcare decision-making, estate and long-term care planning, Medicaid and Medicare considerations, management of finances and property, caregiving arrangements, and housing and home modifications.
Attendees will gain practical strategies for issue-spotting, client counseling, document preparation and review, risk management, and multidisciplinary coordination when representing clients who wish to age in place.
