This program examines the ethical implications of lawyer impairment, including its impact on competence, judgment, and professional responsibility. Participants will learn to recognize warning signs, implement effective prevention strategies, utilize available support resources, and appropriately respond to colleagues in need.
Competence and the Rules Every Pennsylvania Lawyer Must Know: Competence is the foundation of every lawyer’s ethical obligations - and in today’s practice, it extends well beyond knowing the law. This program provides a practical, Pennsylvania-focused review of the core rules governing competence, confidentiality, supervision, and candor, along with critical state-specific requirements that directly affect daily practice. While touching on emerging issues such as artificial intelligence and digital workflows, the program emphasizes the rules lawyers must understand to avoid discipline, malpractice exposure, and client harm.
