Overview

Street-smart defense. High-stakes cases. Serious ethical dilemmas.

Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer isn't just gripping legal drama — it’s a goldmine of teachable moments in legal ethics. In this dynamic seminar, we’ll ride shotgun with Mickey Haller through Season Two and unpack the ethical challenges lurking behind the wheel.

In season two, the Lincoln Lawyer, Mickey Haller, develops a romantic relationship with the owner of a Mexican restaurant, Lisa Trammel. He learns she is feuding with a developer who is attempting to take her property. The developer files a restraining order against Ms. Trammel and is subsequently murdered. When Ms. Trammel is charged with this murder, the Lincoln Lawyer springs into action to defend his new client against a confident prosecutor, Andrea Freeman, who relishes the thought of beating the Lincoln Lawyer at trial.

Watch film clips from this series to examine Haller’s and Freeman’s conduct and determine whether they violated the Rules of Professional Conduct, including:

  • Rule 1.6 Confidentiality of Information, especially in high-profile, media-fueled cases.
  • Rule 1.7 Conflict of Interest: Current Clients: Can a lawyer really date a client and stay within the rules?
  • Rule 1.8 Conflict of Interest: When does defense strategy go too far?
  • Rule 3.4 Fairness to Opposing Party and Counsel: The duty to investigate vs. the risk of obstruction.

With scenes pulled straight from Season Two, we’ll examine how the Rules of Professional Conduct would apply to Haller’s bold — and sometimes questionable — moves.
