Faculty
Alexander Vaccaro MD, PhD, MBA
Dr. Vaccaro graduated Summa Cum Laude from Boston College in 1983 with a B.S. in Biology. He received his M.D. degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine where he was promoted with “Distinction.” He earned membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society and graduated with honors in 1987. He completed a year of Surgical Internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA followed by Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Thomas Jefferson University, where he graduated in 1992. Dr. Vaccaro completed a Spine Fellowship at the University of San Diego, CA. He earned a PhD in 2007 in the field of Spinal Trauma. Dr. Vaccaro is the Richard H. Rothman Professor and Chairman, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor of Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the recipient of the Leon Wiltse award given for excellence in leadership and clinical research for spine care by the North American Spine Society (NASS) and is the past President of Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS), the American Spinal Injury Association, The Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society, and the Association for Collaborative Spine Research. He has over 1,000 peer-reviewed and 220 non-peer reviewed publications. He has published over 380 book chapters and is the editor of over 65 textbooks and co-editor of OKU-Spine I and editor of OKU-8. Dr. Vaccaro is the President of Rothman Institute, Chairman of the department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Co-Director of the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley, and Co-Director of the Spine Fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he instructs current fellows and residents in the diagnosis and treatment of various spinal problems and disorders.
David N. Kugelman, MD
Dr. Kugelman is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery. He received his medical degree from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, which is one of the largest regional medical centers in the country. During his time in medical school, he completed an orthopedic research internship at The Hospital For Special Surgery. Dr. Kugelman further pursued orthopedic research during medical school, by performing an orthopedic trauma research fellowship at NYU Langone Health. After graduation from Geisinger, he completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Langone Health.Following residency, he completed his fellowship in complex adult reconstructive procedures of the hip and knee at the world-renowned Duke University Medical Center. His clinical interests include partial and total knee replacement, total hip replacement, robotic joint replacement, complex primary joint replacement, total knee revisions, total hip revisions, joint infections, prosthetic infections, prosthetic fractures, and lower extremity trauma. Dr. Kugelman practices patient centered medicine and works with individuals through shared decision making. He practices individualized medicine when evaluating the appropriate surgical and non-surgical management to musculoskeletal problems. He remains active in research with over 40 peer reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. He has been part of over 100 poster and podium presentations at the top national orthopedic meetings, including The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. His research interests include improving outcomes following primary and revision joint replacement.
Madeline Tadley, MD
Dr. Tadley graduated from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College At Thomas Jefferson University in 2018. She works in Bordentown, NJ and specializes in Other Specialty and Orthopedic Surgery.
Thomas Cha, MD, MBA
Dr. Cha is a board certified, fellowship trainied orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery. He is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Cha graduated from Princeton University with a BA in Molecular Biology. He received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine while also obtaining a Masters in Business Administration from the Lebow School of Business at Drexel. He went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York. He subsequently completed a fellowship at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Cha maintains a full clinical practice and an active academic and teaching schedule. Prior to joining Rothman Orthopaedics, he led a minimally invasive spine practice at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and served as Director of the Spinal Surgery Fellowship of the Harvard Combined Program. He has presented lectures nationally and internationally and is the author of over 100 scientific articles and several textbook chapters. He has an active interest in basic science research focusing on biomechanics of the spine and patient outcomes research with his research funded by prestigious grants from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Dr. Cha performs both routine and complex surgical procedures on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. He is honored to return to the tri state region to offer patients at Rothman Orthopaedics individualized treatment plans with the most up to date surgical techniques.
Samuel D. Hodge, Jr., Esq.
Professor Hodge is a Professor Emeritus at Temple University where he teaches law, anatomy, and forensic courses. He is also a member of the Dispute Resolution Institute in Philadelphia where he serves as a mediator and neutral arbitrator. Professor Hodge has been named one of the most popular continuing legal education instructors in the country and lectures frequently to attorneys, judges, physicians. and governmental agencies on medical/legal issues and artificial intelligence. He has received multiple teaching awards including being named a Temple University Great Teacher and his Anatomy for Lawyers course was the recipient of the ACLEA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Continuing Legal Education. Professor Hodge is one of the most published authors in the United States on medical/legal matters. His book, Anatomy, and Physiology for Legal Professionals was published by PBI in 2020, and he is also the co-author of the books: Traumatic Head and Brain Injuries, ABA; The Forensic Autopsy, ABA; The Spine, ABA; Clinical Anatomy for Attorneys, ABA; and author of the award-winning book, Anatomy for Litigators, ALI-ABA. He also wrote Law in American Society, McGraw Hill; Law for the Business Enterprise, McGraw Hill; and Thermography and Personal Injury Litigation, Wiley Law. In addition to his authoring multiple books, he has published more than 200 articles in medical and legal journals and in excess of 500 non-referred publications. Professor Hodge is a graduate of Temple University Beasley School of Law and the Graduate Division of the Law School. He has received mediation training at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution. In addition to writing multiple law review articles on the various applications of artificial intelligence from its use in medicine to the legal profession, he testified before the Pennsylvania Legislature’s Democratic Caucus studying the use of artificial intelligence in a business setting. He is also on the committee making recommendations to the Pennsylvania legislature on proposed legislation on police body worn cameras.
