Overview
Don’t get caught in the transparency trap! Private companies are shocked when they learn that their private information has been released to the public by a Pennsylvania state or local government agencies in response to a Right to Know request. This course will provide you with the basics of the Pennsylvania open records laws and the specifics on how to protect your valuable, proprietary, corporate information from public release. For when the best planning fails, we will also share why strategic communications are vital in these kinds of cases and show you how to put together a plan to effectively message and manage your public profile while you fight to protect your corporate records.

Terry L. Mutchler, Esq.
Ms. Mutchler currently serves as the Managing Partner of Mutchler Lyons, a law firm dedicated to serving clients in the area of Transparency Law. She also serves as Vice-President for Shelly Lyons, a full-service Public Affairs and Strategic Communications firm based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. A former award-winning journalist, trial lawyer and best-selling author, Ms. Mutchler is a nationally recognized authority on open government and transparency law. Gov. Ed Rendell appointed Ms. Mutchler as founding Executive Director of the Office of Open Records, created to ensure transparency in government. After a seven-year term ending in 2015, she started the nation’s First Transparency Practice, helping journalists, corporations and agencies comply with the complex field of transparency law. Ms. Mutchler testified before Congress, advised state legislators and policy makers and an international pool of judges seeking to duplicate the Pennsylvania Model of open government. She has given more than 1,500 speeches and training sessions on transparency issues. Earlier in her career, Ms. Mutchler worked in the media law and appellate practice groups of a major Chicago law firm, and clerked for both the Supreme Court of Illinois and the Executive Office of the President of the United States during the Clinton Administration. Before becoming an attorney, she was an investigative reporter for the Associated Press. She also is author of Under This Beautiful Dome, A Senator, A Journalist and the Politics of Gay Marriage (Seal 2014). Ms. Mutchler received her B.A. in Journalism from Pennsylvania State University and her J.D. from John Marshall School of Law. She was selected as a Bohnett Fellow at Harvard University, where she received a certificate in Executive Education for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. Corinna V. Wilson, Esq.
Corinna is a partner in Obermayer’s Litigation Department, as part of the Transparency and Public Data Practice. She works with clients across industries to protect sensitive information, gain access to records, and navigate compliance with Pennsylvania’s Right-to-Know law and the federal Freedom of Information Act. Corinna is well-heeled in Transparency, having served as general counsel and chief operating officer of the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association and chief counsel to the Pennsylvania Office of Open Records. In her work now, she helps multinational corporations understand how to position and protect confidential and proprietary information that is exempted under these laws. In every position she has held — from lawyer, reporter, to consultant, Corinna has focused on solving problems and helping others create meaningful change. She prides herself on being a good listener, embracing teamwork, staying approachable, and above all, making herself useful. Becoming a lawyer was one of the most transformative experiences of her life, shaping the clarity, discipline, and collaborative spirit she brings to every client relationship.
