This panel will address each of these goals, including why they are important, share best practices, and provide a framework that any lawyer or law firm can follow. You will hear from a leading professional liability attorney, a leading law firm consultant, a longtime large law firm leader, and the senior director/corporate counsel at a major utility. Each will offer their unique perspectives on essential steps for creating your strategic plan, no matter what size practice you have.

Josh J. T. Byrne, Esq.
Mr. Byrne is a member of the Professional Liability Department at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, P.C. and Co-Chair of the Disciplinary Board Practice where he concentrates his practice on representing and defending professionals in a variety of professional liability matters. Mr. Byrne regularly represents attorneys in legal malpractice, wrongful use of civil proceedings and disciplinary matters. He also represents many other types of professionals in the federal and state courts in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and before disciplinary boards. Mr. Byrne has devoted his legal career to the protection of professionals and is highly regarded in this arena throughout the state. He is the Former Chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Professional Liability Committee, Co-Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Professional Responsibility Committee and Professional Guidance Committee, and is an active member of Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Ethics Committee. He is also a Co-Chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Amicus Brief Committee. Mr. Byrne is a former Hearing Committee Member serving the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He serves as a Zone One delegate to the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s House of Delegates and as a Judge Pro Temp for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. A prolific writer, Mr. Byrne publishes extensively on malpractice avoidance and authors a recurring column in The Legal Intelligencer on professional liability topics. He frequently presents to legal and business organizations throughout Pennsylvania on professional liability themes. Mr. Byrne graduated with a dual major in Political Science and Japanese Studies From Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. After college, he worked for two years as a coordinator for international relations in Chiba, Japan. He then obtained his juris doctor from Rutgers University School of Law. He is rated AV-Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating for professional competence and has been recognized by “Best Lawyers in America” for Professional Malpractice Law- Defendants, and as a Pennsylvania “Super Lawyer.”
Patricia B. Santelle, Esq.
Patti Santelle is Chair Emeritus of White and Williams LLP. For seven years, as the Managing Partner and Chair of the Executive Committee, Patti was responsible for carrying out the strategic plan and policies of the firm, overseeing the management of the operations of the firm and such other duties and responsibilities as are typically associated with being a chief executive officer. When Patti was appointed to that position in December 2013, she was the first woman in the firm’s history and in the City of Philadelphia to serve in that role in a major law firm. During her tenure, the firm grew to over 200 lawyers in ten offices in six states. Prior to being Managing Partner, Patti served as Chair of the Commercial Litigation Department, as well as Co-Chair of the firm’s Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith Practice. Patti is recognized by her clients and peers as a leading attorney in the field of complex insurance coverage. She has devoted more than 30 years to the representation of insurance company clients in matters involving asbestos, environmental, toxic tort and long-tail claims. She is known for her depth of experience, responsiveness, drive and ability to craft solutions for her clients, whether they are in litigation or not. Patti thoroughly understands the needs of her insurer clients. Patti’s practice includes the prosecution and defense of insurers in coverage actions in state and federal courts around the country as well as alternative dispute resolution proceedings. She also negotiates the resolution of disputed coverage claims and counsels insurance company clients on claims litigation strategy, claims resolution procedures and coverage questions. While in law school, Patti was President of the Student Bar Association, winner (overall and best brief) of the Hunter Advanced Moot Court Competition and a member of the school’s National Moot Court Team. After graduation, she served as Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Daniel J. O’Hern, Associate Justice, Supreme Court of New Jersey, and an associate with the Morristown, New Jersey firm of Pitney, Hardin Kipp & Szuch. She joined White and Williams in 1990. Since serving as her firm’s Managing Partner, Patti has devoted significant time to leadership not only in the legal community but also in the business, law school and pro bono communities in the region in which she lives and works. She is a frequent speaker not only on key issues impacting on the insurance industry but also the legal industry, including leadership and professional development. Patti is a graduate of Rutgers University School of Law, J.D,. and Boston College, A.B, magna cum laude. She is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Michael Short
Michael (Mike) Short is a Co-Founding Principal of LawVision. He counsels law firms around the world on strategic, management, compensation, merger, and financial issues. Over the course of his over three-decade long career as a consultant to the legal industry, Mike has worked with well over 700 law firms. His client base ranges from small, “local” firms in many countries to large, multi-national operations. The focus of his current client work is related to strategic assessments of the overall health and competitive positions of law firms: the development and implementation of strategies for firms, practices, and client or industry teams; all aspects of mergers & acquisitions; the development of innovative Partner compensation systems that truly promote and reward teamwork and sharing; facilitating leadership succession; and, industry and client research via any of the many surveys he has developed over his career. His client, in all cases, is the total law firm – not management or his primary point(s) of contact. When not working on client projects, Mike is a regular blog contributor, a frequent speaker on leadership and management topics, and a constant researcher and analyst on the ever-evolving business of law. Prior to co-founding LawVision, Mike has practiced with Hildebrandt Baker Robbins (at Thomson Reuters), Hildebrandt International, and the Law Firm Services Group at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland.
Liz R. Triscari, Esq.
Elizabeth Rose Triscari (she/her/hers) is Senior Director, Corporate Counsel for American Water, the largest U.S. publicly traded water and wastewater utility company. The company, based in Camden, New Jersey, employs more than 7,000 dedicated professionals who provide water, wastewater and other related services to more than 15 million people in 46 states. Ms. Triscari represents American Water in various regulatory proceedings, as well as in connection with acquisitions and litigation in state and federal courts. Ms. Triscari serves on the Executive Council of the PBA Commission on Women in the Profession and as Chair of the PBA In-House Counsel Committee. She is on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation is a past member of PBI’s Board of Directors and past Chair of the PBA Public Utility Law Section. Ms. Triscari received her B.A. in Government from Cornell University and J.D. from Boston College Law School. Prior to joining American Water, Ms. Triscari served as Pennsylvania’s Deputy Small Business Advocate representing small business interests before the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.
