By order dated September 8, 2015, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court amended Rule of Criminal Procedure 556 (Indicting Grand Jury) to specify the form and contents of a petition by a court of common pleas to resume the use of indicting grand juries. The amended rule codifies the Court’s prior order of March 12, 2013. According to the Final Report of the Criminal Procedural Rules Committee, the Committee concluded that, after two years of experience with the new indicting grand jury rules, it would be helpful to provide directions to the common pleas courts directly in the rules rather than just the Court’s order. Amended Rule 556 is effective November 1, 2015.
